Why do we need to disinfect water?

Surface water is often contaminated by soil, industrial waste water, domestic sewage and various impurities, which promotes the growth of bacteria. Sometimes the number of bacteria reaches to tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands per milliliter of water; in some waters, E. coli per milliliter is even more than tens of thousands. although in the process of water treatment, through the purification process of coagulation, sedimentation (clarification), filtration, etc., most of the bacteria, E. coli, pathogens and other microorganisms adhering to the suspended matter are removed together, there are still a certain amount of microorganisms that could not be removed, they are harmful to the human body. In order to protect people's health and prevent the spread of disease, water must be disinfected to kill viruses in the water. China's "Standard for Drinking Water Quality" stipulates that the total number of bacteria in the water sample could not exceed 100/ml. coliform or fecal coliforms should not be detected. to meet the standard, disinfection is required after the coagulation, clarification, and filtration.

In the industrial cooling water treatment, in order to prevent the circulating cooling water from producing biological slime, it is necessary to control the number of aerobic heterotrophic bacteria in the water to not exceed to 1×105/ml. Therefore, it is also necessary to  do sterilization treatment for industrial circulating cooling water system

In the desalination treatment system, in order to prevent the ion exchange resin from being contaminated by bacteria, it is also necessary to sterilize the raw water. In addition, disinfection could also remove the chromaticity of water.
